Been using this Positive Gaming Impact Dance Pad for several months:

Now it mysteriously broke, oddly. (Down arrow only reacting while both left and right arrow buttons are NOT pressed down)
Disassembling and messing with the chipset resulted in failure. Need new dance pad now and don't know what to take.
Those stainless steel ones are out of the price range for me.

Some pros/cons about the one from Positive Gaming:
  • Pros:
    • Good quality and durability at low price (30€).
    • Fast reaction.
    • Easy installation.
    • Safe grip while playing. (socks)
  • Cons:
    • Could be larger for me. (I'm TALL)
    • Button reaction area too large. Put one foot in the middle and hit up and down button at the same time.
    • Slides over the floor from several moves. (Carpet here)
    • Sometimes won't hook up to the game and does not react. Game restart required.
    • Slightly uneven surface at corners which is sometimes irritating.
    • Needs to be stored in garage for one week after unpacking because of horribly disturbing chemical odors.

If anyone can make a good suggestion for a promising successor to death from above I'd be thankful.

Review your dance pads also.

Sock is tall and owns a Cobalt Flux, and it's quite a dreamer - quite near arcade performance.  I'm tall and I've owned a Red Octane ignition, and it works okay, but has a little more give than I would like.  One of the buttons died after about 6 months of play for me.  There's a couple of places out there that have these dense foam pads that are excellent and remarkably cheap.  My friend has one and paid like $60 for it.  I think this is what they have: http://www.amazon.com/Dance-Revolution-DDRgame-Density-Carrying-Playstation/dp/B000IBVBMC

Cobalt Flux = http://www.amazon.com/Cobalt-Flux-Residential-PS2-Wii-PC/dp/B003JV1O4I/ref=sr_1_13?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1322481632&sr=1-13 ?
The few reviews confirm it's supposedly good. There are people claiming durability over 6 years despite daily use. Might be worth the extra digit. Seems like it is not being manufactured anymore. (?)
Apparantly still available here: http://www.discountddrpads.com/cobalt-flux-home-dance-p-2446.html?osCsid=faf6c56f5ed00316d76d0c093020f85d
Now are they selling the real thing is the question. Also should expect A LOT from 300 bucks. The €-price is 330. Lawl.

They are quite impressive.  But yeah, the dense foam pads are pretty amazing for the money.  They have an almost nicer feel than arcade - your feet spring back from them as you step.  The benefit of having metal pads = playing with shoes on, which I'm very fond of.  Oh, and the bar thing, but if you're Santotsuga, you don't need a bar, just an arm chair to pull off those 14s. :)

I'd like to stay no-bar, for maximum challenge, exhaustion and blood pressure. Oh wait the third one is plain unhealthy; nevermind.
Bought a crappy 10€ one just to give myself a lecture on why higher price is justified. (12 months guarantee, but you need to pay
the return fee, TO HONG KONG (= you won't want to return it))

I have a RedOctane dense foam version in my closet that I was given for Christmas one year, and it worked really well actually. The only drawback I saw in it was that it still slid around on the carpet more than I wanted. My Cobalt is really amazing, but I basically bought it 3 months before I stopped playing DDR on the pad. It just sits next to my bookshelf now, looking somewhat dusty. I got the arcade panel mod for it too but I disliked how the buttons responded after that, so I removed the mod. Otherwise, it was extremely functional and hardly ever shifted but maybe 1-3 inches.

The cobalt also weighs a ton. Close to 50 lbs if I remember correctly. It is also not very transportable.

I decided to stop playing on pad as soon as I can AA Vanessa from Anarchy III on Heavy. Simply dead exhausted 10 seconds into the 12th notes.

Now I gotta go there to find out what's wrong.

Professionally packaged + Hong Kong?  Not that I'm knocking the area, but they expect too much.

I need a new router too - if I push more than 50 mb over it, it resets and takes about 1.5 minutes to reset.

Ah, duct tape, makes for a nice box, don't you say?

Mmm... fan time, good thing they don't cost all that much.

Aren't most DSL modems separate?  The way mine works, I plug into the uplink port of my router, and then it deals the damage to the users on a d20 scale.

The thing we have has DSL-Modem integrated. It's common for those routers produced by internet providers. It's nicer to have in an independent third-party router which is capable of that.

Also got that Hong Kong dance pad finally. Doesn't look has crappy as I feared, but didn't test yet. Also came with CD with fancy installer in Chinese. I have no idea what it is but I found Stepmania 4.0 in one of the folders on it.

Huh, not too shabby.  Can you get a DSL Modem by itself there?  I mean, one less thing to go wrong in the router, right?

How is the HK Dance Pad?  Nothing quite like ordering from halfway across the world; it's a guarantee that you'll never return it for the hassle factor that it takes.  Maybe we need to adopt that business model - cheap stuff which breaks half the time but doesn't matter because it's cheaper to just replace.

Still doing work on it. I got it two months ago, ripped the pads apart, cleaned it all, bought new sensors (still need to get 2p sensors), replaced all the screws in the entire thing, etc.

Waiting a bit to get a BemaniPC for using a Minimaid to play OpenITG, etc.

Maybe a month's worth of playing after nothing for close to 3 years:

Proper pads and good sensors.

Full combo! Niiiiice!

Doubles requires... two good pads. And determination. And shuffle experience. I tried a few rounds and the best I did was a B on .59 heavy (fun doubles chart). When there's crossovers in there things get funky.

That's the intention. I could probably use the sensors currently in the 2p side but they're really old and the rubber has literally taken the shape of the channel they sit in, along with the L-brackets that hold them in place and actually trigger them. I'd rather just purchase a brand new set of 16 sensors for the 2p side, which will happen sometime in August. The 2p side is currently non-functional because I removed a lot of things to clean it all out and I am waiting for the new sensors to finish putting it back together.

After (about 6 hours):

Yeah, I removed all of the metal panels and strips from the pads and placed them in the giant red bucket in our garage. Then I poured a bunch of concentrated cleaning liquid in it, filled the rest up with water, and let them all soak. Then I scrubbed every piece with steel wool to clean them and remove a lot of the dirt and other junk like gum, rust, etc.

Perfect Attack Loli!
I wonder if my PA would get better if I had me one of these.

At the beginning of this week, I rewired the ground wiring in my cabinet (since Korean built cabinets have sucky / no ground wiring at all). I was hoping it would fix my speaker popping issues. Well, it only made it worse, but this was the result of the contributing problem being adjusted. It turned out to be a speaker wiring problem, or so I thought. It was really the L/R RCA jacks on the motherboard; the internal connectors weren't properly meeting due to the housing being broken and cracked. Bought new connectors online, pulled out the old ones and soldered in new ones, and now it works without issue again.

There's only one way to find out.  GET ONE.  FOR SCIENCE. :3

I hope this is the last money you need to spend on maintaining the machine, Mr. Sock. :o
Glad it was something simple and traceable.

Not for a while. I still need 2p sensors, LEDs for the pad lights to replace the neon, new pad -> cabinet connection box to replace the crappy one currently on there, a few more screws to finish off the 2p side with, etc.

I hate things which need maintenance. I either keep things so nice and tidy they never need maintenance ever, or wait so long till maintenance can no longer be postponed. Sometimes I combine both procedures, leading to my room looking like the most orderly collection of dusted things in existence.

I will consider it "finished" once I complete that list of things above. It won't be much to maintain once I actually finish everything on that list, which is relatively small and doesn't take much time, only money. The one thing in that list that will take more than 15 minutes to fix will be the LED mods, but I needed to get that done anyway since one of my neon bulbs under an arrow panel was broken (dad accidentally hit it while getting the last few stripped screws out for me while I was away at ACEN) and the inverter board in the 1p up arrow is dead.

Do any of the connections require wire splicing, or are they for the most part all prewired/connected?  (e.g. the connection to the front part of the machine) :o

The front connector from pad to cabinet is a simple replacing of a tube and harness. Nothing needs to be altered, just need to unhook the wires, pull them out of the old tube, line them through the new tube, and screw the connecting tube/boxes back to the pad and machine after clipping the wire harnesses back together.

Yeah it is. As I said before, the remaining things on my to-do list are relatively simple, minus the LED mod. They just cost $ rather than time, and I already have my budget planned out for a while and those things will just have to wait a bit.

Every once in a while, we'll do stupid stuff on Sock's machine. Like the "One Foot Challenge", which is exactly what it sounds like, you can only use one foot through the song unless there is a jump, but then you have to return the unused foot to the unused position before continuing. Or the "Sitting down Challenge", where you have to sit in the middle of the pad and attempt to complete the chart with your hands. Stupid stuff to mess around and have fun with it.

We came up with something new tonight, one person attempts playing the same chart on both pads... at the same time. The results are quite silly: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQRgh95Dz9Y&feature=youtu.be

I attempted a 2 on light, but decided to stop, after flinging myself around for only a minute. Then Sock got up there and passed. XD

I've done lots of stuff like that on Pump. Try butt mode where you hit all the arrows with only your butt, it's pretty great.

(Recommended only for really easy charts.)

What. If I sat in the middle of the pad I'd already be pressing the buttons. ALL OF THEM.

I imagine it would help to have a step chart in front of you so you can do plyometric pushups for the 2x jumps.

I just got this revelation.  Wow, that looks like it would be a fun chart that needs a swivel chair.  :aw)
