Title: Interesting rants from stupidity
Post by: Imasock on 11-15-2008, 20:12
Welcome to the next "Interesting X from Y" series of threads.

So, I get the mail today from the mailbox, and my two packages arrive.  I painstakingly pull them out of the mailbox after a fashion, because they were fairly large.  Now, right on the top of the packages, which incidentally are my megami/dengeki magazines, it says in like, size 120 font, "DO NOT BEND".  And they were practically bent in half when shoved in the mailbox.

What the hell, how hard is it to get out of the dang mail truck, walk to my door, place the packages next to the potted plants we have so if we're not home when they deliver, said packages will not be stolen.  I don't understand why(or how) people are that ignorant.

Try ordering records next time - see what happens when you file a claim with them.

Otherwise, I think it's just a case of needing to make friends with the mailperson, and letting them know where the best place is to leave the mail if you're not there.

To add something to the pile:

I have a computer science assignment which will take more time to actually run the code than it will take to do any other single part of it.  Apparently, one iteration of the loop takes .57 seconds.  Too bad we have to do it 18000 times.

It's a shame it wasn't .59 seconds, eh?

For some reason my packages end up at the biostat students' office instead of where I live despite having the latter address. I don't get it at all, but it's generally only a mild annoyance.

I guess I'm glad my packages get sent to the right address then. 8|

One thing that always gets on my nerves is when people are packing your groceries and they bag the eggs on the bottom, then throw other things on top of them. That and when they pack as much as they can in one bag so when you pick it up, it practically rips at the bottom.

Grocers have to do some of the most annoying things that are easily avoidable. Really, how hard is it to bag the eggs separately? I mean that one little extra bag would prevent me from getting home with 4 broken eggs, seriously... I raged hard that night...

Just think of it as someone deciding that you're going to have an omelette NOW for you.  I can't think of a better reason to have an omelette than to have someone force it upon me.  I mean, it's an omelette!

I used to work for a grocery store, you wouldn't imagine how many calls we get about this.  I'd have to go up there and show people how to bag a stupid bag of groceries the right way.  And they wonder why I got promoted in 2 weeks.  You don't be an idiot, that's how.

We've all seen how microsoft's plans don't exactly... go according to plan.  This just sounds preposterous.  I don't know anyone who would even think about this, and being the CPU enthusiast that I am, I certainly wouldn't recommend or purchase anything in that manner.

Seriously, anybody with a brain could see that that's a terrible idea and even Microsoft said it would cost the user more. But who cares about those stupid customers right? It's almost enough to make me want to use Linux.

It can't be implemented if people don't want to buy it. That's how business works.

Look at Vista and think about something sinking harder.

Here's my issue with it - It's pretty much already addressed in the same way with Microsoft Volume Licensing for businesses, and users do what they need to with it.  Throw Citrix in there and you have them entering a useless market.  The only thing that might make it worthwhile is having the hardware cost nothing to the user (like in the case of buying time on a cluster) and it might be useful to old people.  Yay Microsoft for inappropriate everything.

Yeah I know that I wasn't trying to say this was coming I just wanted to point out that for an individual such as you or me it would be totally ludicrous and would fail even harder than Vista. Like Icy said for a business it would work fine but for an individual it would end up screwing them.

I use AIM to chat with friends and recently I upgraded my flash player and suddenly every time I close the AIM window and try to bring it up again it activates AOL Radio, this is extremely annoying as I have to continually turn it off, there's no way to deactivate it that I can see it's just like AOL's telling me that I'm gonna listen to their radio station and I'm gonna like it.

Really? Any details on this AIM ad-hack? Is it easy to install, what kinda program, is it reliable etc. etc.
Title: Interesting rants from stupidity
Post by: Imasock on 01-22-2009, 23:55
Yeah it's easy to install, it runs its own installation.  I use the AIM classic hack which = extremely clean look, still has all the functions of AIM, and takes up way less memory/CPU.

http://www.aimadhack.net/

I use v.4.16
http://www.aimadhack.net/olderaim/AIM%20Ad%20Hack%204.16.exe

Because I can't stand the new AIMs.  It's a small download, but then it proceeds to download the classic AIM and install it, while not allowing certain files to install and deleting/modifying others so it runs ad free.

I remember something odd happening where 'Sock wouldn't appear as away when he actually was, but that's not terribly common and isn't really a huge deal (especially if you just sign off when you're not there).

In general it seems to work well for him although I haven't personally tried it.

Pidgin and Trillian have the advantage of supporting IRC natively, if that's a consideration.  Pidgin works about 90% of AIM's capabilities with 10% of AIM's footprint.  Trillian has about 130% of AIM's capabilities with 40% of AIM's footprint, but costs >9000% more.

Tried pidgin, didn't really like the setup so I installed new version of AIM and applied the adhack. I'll use this for a while and see how it goes. Thanks a lot guys.

Hello from Amazon.com.

We're writing about the order you placed on January 20 2009 15:04 PST (Order# 103-7087033-2221821).

UPS attempted delivery of your shipment but was unable to leave the package unattended.

Excuse me, I was home the entire goddamn day and they did not even ring the doorbell. I am not waiting outside my apartment watching for the UPS truck which could arrive at any time at all. RING THE DOORBELL, IT IS OUTSIDE THE BUILDING. THAT IS A VERY EASY THING TO DO.

Geez.
Title: Interesting rants from stupidity
Post by: eternalomega on 01-24-2009, 00:16
Yeah I know but at least they wouldn't leave the package unattended. UPS had a really bad habit of just leaving my dad's medication (critical to his survival) just sitting on the porch, luckily I am usually home due to my school schedule so I'd pick them up and take them inside.
Title: Interesting rants from stupidity
Post by: k//eternal on 01-24-2009, 00:16
But I mean, I was actually home so there was no reason the delivery couldn't be made. They just walked up to the door and left, apparently.
Title: Interesting rants from stupidity
Post by: eternalomega on 01-24-2009, 00:26
Oh yeah, absolutely. I totally agree with your opinion on the matter, they are not very reliable. I was just contrasting your issue with the deliveryman just getting bored and deciding to wander off and my issue with the deliveryman going "expensive and life-saving medication...it can go on the porch".
Title: Interesting rants from stupidity
Post by: k//eternal on 01-24-2009, 00:39
It would be pretty bad if he decided to wander off with the medication, too :(

Rant time.

Why, oh, why, Sun, did you have to make an IDE which doesn't allow you to add or move things around from their defaults when there's a bit of an issue with nearly every component missing some sort of functionality that "can be extended lol its in the docs"?  Mr. Java, I used to not like you so much.  You changed a bit, and so I'm not completely against working with you now; however, you still are lacking in your default libraries.  What would you say if I told you that nearly every other language that has a set of widgets has a working IDE for those components without having to tweak them?  I'm glad you're extensible, but I just want what every child dreams of - using tinker toys to build a house without having to think about mechanics of materials or how the thing is going to hold up in 20 minutes.

For the record, jTree is way more convoluted than it needs to be, and jTable needs a single cell modification.  The default implementation of both jPanels and Canvases are more or less useless with graphics unless you extend them, making them not plug and play.  jPanels by default come with 5 directions.  There is no rhyme or reason to changing the default size of any of the nesting controls.  And if you ever dive into Java and use Swing components, please let me know so that you don't have to go through the same mind crunching that I've had to bother with.

Rant over.

Here's an analogy:

If you had a box which had a box in it which had a piece of fruit in it, you would need to unbox the box, then unbox the other box to get the piece of fruit.  I don't like the way that works.  I'd like to have a sticker on the outside which tells me some useful general information about the piece of fruit, so that I don't have to mess with the packaging to get to some useful bits about the fruit.

This is the crux of object oriented programming.  Security vs convenience.

Yeah, well, R doesn't even plot an ellipse easily. I had to draw the axes (of the ellipse) on the graph myself in Photoshop after looking through the documentation and Internets for like 2 hours to attempt a homework problem that doesn't actually require brains, just the right code (and still didn't even find that).

Open-source software is so poorly documented at times; it's pretty unfortunate.

THIS IS MY SIXTH CUP!

Funny thing about today is that teacher moved the assignment ahead.  Yay for "weekend assignments."

What's funny is that open-source software moves quickly enough that even when you decide to buy the "book", it's a couple versions back, and they fundamentally changed the way it works.

Also, R is wack.  Functional languages are unorthodox, and are enough of a brainmush for a coder - much less for people who don't work with it.  On the plus side, you could make a game in it if you wanted to. XD  "What are you doing?" "Statistics."  "That looks like a moving ball."  "Statistics."

It's about as real-time as XML data on webpages, do an update every 50 ms - means at most a 100 ms lag (in case file is open and writing), assuming you're using a hard drive.  If you make it a RAM drive, you could make it real-time, since RAM is 1000x quicker access.  What does that mean?  (DataData)Revolution. :D

Sound like a challenge?

You know what's stupid? My circadian rhythm, which is somewhere between, screwed up and totally obliterated. Ever since the spring forward I haven't been able to sleep till 2 in the morning and then I sleep till 11 unless I set my alarm clock. I try going to bed early but I just toss and turn until 2 or 3. This is a bad thing because when I need it fixed for when I head back to school. I know this is wrong because usually I'm dead tired by 1:30 even on weekends/breaks. It's actually 2:30 right now and this is the last thing I'm doing before forcing myself into bed and (hopefully) sleep.

Know what helps with making yourself tired?  HARD LABOR.  Or at the very least, exercise, provided it's not less than 4 hours before bedtime.

I totally know what you mean though - yesterday I was tired at around 4:30 pm because... it was 4:30 and there's a lull in the time.  So I tried to take a nap.  In the sun.  Yeah, that doesn't work so well - thanks hypothalamus.  Then later, extreme tiredness!  But without wanting to go to sleep?  I love spring. :D

I know I should exercise but it was already like 1 before I thought of it and at that point it was too late. So yes sleep is now the elusive prey, but tonight I'm gonna go nuts with exercise and then turn everything off at midnight and go to bed. Hopefully my body will surrender to my will and I will awaken before 11.

I found a place online - Philips - which has some sort of light therapy where it "messes with your circadian rhythm to wake you up naturally" - it recommended that I get 30-45 minutes of sunlight for the first three days at 7 am then <30 of sunlight at 6:30 am.  I wonder how much it is?

Rant = I was at the mall, I was playing DDR, doing awesome (A'd Pluto Relinquish woo!) when this little kid walks onto the pad when I was trying to AA FELM and messed up my 400 combo (AKA prevented me from AA'ing it). I raged, but it made me wonder... Why don't parents keep their toddlers on a leash? They just run amok and get abducted or cause trouble and anger those around them. Idk, I mean we put dogs on leashes... Why not little kids? (they have around the same IQ and self control)

Sorry if this seems "in-humane" as people think... But hey, when your kid gets abducted, don't come crying to me....

They have some variant of that in China, but in America you have that whole overreactive human rights thing. Well, weigh it against what could happen if they get kidnapped and it's not so bad at all...

Considering how absurdly long leashes get even for dogs these days, though, I wouldn't count on the kids being much less annoying even if that were to happen.
Title: Interesting rants from stupidity
Post by: eternalomega on 03-15-2009, 00:34
No no I agree, little kids should be on leashes at all times, specially made short leashes, or shock collars. That would keep them in line...I don't particularly like kids (as if that wasn't painfully apparent).
Title: Interesting rants from stupidity
Post by: icy is a fish again on 03-15-2009, 10:38
I geass the difference is that with dogs, you keep them on collars so that they don't run away or cause trouble in public.  With humans, you need to teach them not to run away but at the same time be able to work in the same space with their parents at first.  I think the idea is a good one for younger children (like from walking onset to like 3) but after that, they need to learn boundary of mother's love and stay within it.

Just remember, you were a kid once, and some of the things that made you annoying also made you cute. :3

Yes, indeed I was a child and did annoying/cute child-like things. My true problem is kids that are out of control or parents that try to negotiate with a child that is having a fit. I believe in strictness and discipline that will teach a child what is and is not acceptable. When the child is calm then you can talk to them and they will grow up understanding that talking is good and to be done when you are calm, while the discipline will teach them that they sometimes will not get their way.

True that.  DOUBLE TRUE!

Discipline is a fantastic thing.  It's just as important for us adults, moreso that we do it (to) ourselves, so we get things done.  The previous generation (Gen X) grew up with a fear that their child would call protective services on them and psychologists saying that kids shouldn't ever be hit.  Occasionally, kids need to know who has the stick.
Title: Interesting rants from stupidity
Post by: gokemon4 on 03-15-2009, 16:06
Exactly, no discipline is taught these days, so kids (of all ages) run around with no fear of repercussion. That, and the age of parents is lowering thus teens raising kids works out even less... Hence why a simple leash or occasional spanking would indeed really help these days.  D:

A leash might seem cruel to some people, but spanking is still considered ok to most people.

Here's a rant from this morning, except please excuse if the rant is not the usual fare. My rant is a wonderful, happy one, I was forced to put my beloved SNES into storage, a stone and metal affair with no climate control. This was almost 9 years ago. NINE...YEARS...AGO, I went and got it out of storage today and brought it home, IT STILL WORKS. After much cleaning of the outside (around 6 wet paper towels worth and 6 or so q-tips), the games are no longer dusty and the system is back in pristine condition(kinda). I am so happy now and will waste the rest of my day playing some super mario world/super metroid.

Well, on the way back from picking up a friend, my car started causing problems and I had to pull over three times, the last requiring a tow home.  It was fine two hours earlier when I came home from school.  At least it happened on a recreational journey and not to school or something.

That's what I get for driving an old car.

Sorry to hear that, the nice thing about old cars is that they don't generally cost any more than new cars to fix things that go wrong, especially if you have one that is ubiquitous.  I have a 1997 Buick, and when things go wrong, it's about $400 to fix.  It's better than having a $250 car payment and then having to pay the $400 to fix it.

I hate being semi-blind and not having steady hands... While gluing down the tiles on my new 3x3x3 cube the white face wound up horribly crooked, at least it wasn't bad enough to interfere with the other pieces, but still... Ugh... Stickers are so much easier to put on.  XD

eternalomega - GET EARTHBOUND!  :D

Don't I wish, I actually have somewhat of a wish list concerning snes rpg's: Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Tales of Phantasia,Ys 3: Wanderers from Ys, and Zelda Link to the Past. Unfortunately these are rare specimens and I have no way of getting any of them.

I have run into a nostalgic problem with the cartridges though, I was playing Super Mario World with my girlfriend when I reached down for something and jostled the cart ever so slightly. I heard an alarming "uh oh" and when I looked up the screen had gone totally black except for little mario and luigi sprites. Upon reset all the data had been lost from all 3 games including the one my dad had where he was all the way at Bowser's castle (my dad used to play all the time..better than me). This did not anger me as I looked at it as a fresh start.

Oh and Imasock truly I feel for you for that does sucketh most righteously.

Ha, not really. I got this weird assembly cube which has tiles as opposed to stickers. So I am mostly putting it together. Though for some reason the cube really sucks compared to the other ones I got from the place. So it's really disappointing.

@ eternalomega - Yeah, earthbound is a tough find these days, makes me glad I got it when it first came out! (Though at the time I was mostly fascinated by the big green box it came in, lol... I was only like 4, so I guess it was a big selling point for me)  :awesomD

Okay, here I go...

So a few weeks ago while I was living in San Diego, my little sis told me about how she was playing around on one of my PSO: ESP. 1 & 2 files. I asked her if she was using the green (well, technically viridian, but whatever) male ranger. She said yes. X( Now that I'm back at my parent's house, I find out that she messed around in my YELLOWBOZE RAmarl instead, which is ironic since that character was modeled after my little sis. Still, she made me worry about my PSO files because she 'got the details wrong'. -_-;

So, I still need to somehow raise $1400 by Tuesday, otherwise I can't go on my trip to Canada for my service project.  Mom tells me I should have saved my money instead of spent it on things from Japan but in all honesty, it wasn't that much, and I certainly have not spent $1400 since December on items from Japan.

Second, we sent out over 50 letters to people for support donations, and I think maybe 10 responded with like $25-50 donations.  I appreciate the donations and all but many of the people who I thought would donate did not do so, and the people I least expected to donate ended up donating.  I'm thankful for it all, but I'm disappointed at many of the people I was hoping would donate.

One thing that you can do to increase your lead conversion (though 20% is not bad at all) is to send along a self-addressed stamped envelope with the mailers.  Another thing you can do is call and explain your situation and remind them - a lot of time, people just forget.  That said, 4 days is a fair time to get something done. :)

And k//, nah I'm good, if I was actually learning something I may not be in the problem. My main problem is that it is such a bad environment I really don't care, I learn more staying home and watching the History Channel all day. It would get confiscated, you aren't allowed to have any "gadgets" in class really, they just take them away. To bad I never found enjoyment in good literature.  :(

And a laptop would be fun to bring, but again, it would get confiscated or stolen.

@ eternalomega - Yeah, florida public schools are plagued with that. For most of your time, they teach you to take one test (the FCAT), so you don't learn much at all, but it places you into your classes. Me, since I did mediocre on them got placed in mediocre classes. AKA I wound up with all the idiots in the school despite the fact the people who I grew up with/got better grades than, did good on the test and wound up in AP classes.

After 3 years of being in normal classes where the kids are so slow you don't even get through 4 chapters a year it really just drains you of any motivation. It's a shame when the schools put more emphasis onto trying to get money than proper teaching.

I know a lot of northern florida public schools are great, but for some reason south florida schools are plagued with ghetto riffraff and horrid budget cuts. It's a real shame the government puts so little into education here.

Title: Interesting rants from stupidity
Post by: eternalomega on 05-13-2009, 01:06
Well why did you do not so hot on the FCAT? Was it difficult or did you just not care? Either way, I understand why you just don't care, I was lucky and got into the high school that only allowed AP or honors level stuff so it was if not challenging at least it kept me interested. As to your boredom problem, good literature is subjective, anyone who says one book is "good" and another is "low" literature is elitist and full of crap. Find something you like and run with it. I might be able to make a suggestion, do you like noir/detective stories or wizard stories?

That now, costs money. The closest private school is around 30k a year, something my parents didn't have laying around at the time. But after high school, that is what I plan on doing. (Getting my AA then going to a good college).

And yeah, I was never really prepared for the FCAT mentally, the teachers/school puts a lot of stress on you to do good it winds up doing more harm then good. Though last year they resorted to bribing the students to do good which I thought was sad. (Get a 5 or higher and you get an iPod shuffle).

As far as literature goes, I mostly like philosophy stuff, but have very little knowledge on what is good. Well I guess I like anything that makes you think (as long as it is well written).
Title: Interesting rants from stupidity
Post by: eternalomega on 05-13-2009, 01:43
Well there's a difference between philosophical or deep written/thinking texts and a lot of mainstream books. I like both, but for the most part I just chill and read some easy reading to enjoy myself and let the brain relax in a productive fashion.
Title: Interesting rants from stupidity
Post by: gokemon4 on 05-13-2009, 05:04
I do that but with music, but it doesn't really need to be philosophical but I just like to think after reading something. To me that means you wrote a good book, same with movies. If you walk out of a theater thinking about the movie not the special effects, it is a good movie.

So yeah, thinking is good when it comes to stuff like books, though I haven't really found anything that has done that. (Again, I never cared for reading, it tends to put me to sleep)  D:

Sounds like you would enjoy the finer points of satire.  Pick up "I Am America, and So Can You" by Stephen Colbert.  You'll be entertained at least for as long as you have in school.

If you like math, there's plenty of things that you can come up with to keep you busy.  Pick up a Schaum's outlines and start going through Stats, Trig, or Calculus.  It's cheap book, and there's no fillers.

Yeah, I mean I don't plan on going to MIT or anything, just a place where I can get a good education. Because I am sick of being so limited and not being able to learn. It's quite frustrating!

Thanks for the book recomendations though, I will stop by a bookstore tonight and get all of them if I can. I figure if I can't listen to music might as well enjoy another form of entertainment. (In and out of school)  :D

Okay, rant time.

New Infected Mushroom Promo - I'M. IN MIND.

They're going with a much less interesting sound on this album.  It seems like they have been listening to the people who are DJs who said "I CAN'T MIX THIS :V" so they made very pretty sounding repetitive drivel.  I like the idea of track 5, track 6 is really the only song I like.  I hope their album is far more listenable.  Right now they're generic HOMMEGA sound.  WE ARE IN SPACE.  DIFFERENT DIMENSIONS.  Lulz.

Haha, what is this? If this is a thread for ranting about pet peeves, then....
Being in middle school, you know, there are always boys who think they're cool, right? Well, some of these guys go too far in winter to impress the girls. Eighth period I have gym, and eighth period also happens to be the last period of the school day. So the boys change into shorts and T-shirts for gym, and guess what? They think they can impress the girls by not changing back. In the middle of winter, in 10 degree weather. x_x So the popular girls are all like, "How do you not get cold?" and they're trying to impress them, and say, "Oh, we're not cold." THIS PISSES ME OFF MAJORLY. YOU HAVE NO IDEA. X(
lol that was random
Title: Interesting rants from stupidity
Post by: icy is a fish again on 05-14-2009, 19:23
Actually, it's not to impress girls.  It's actually because guys have a guy complex, and if one person does it, you have to do it better.  Either that, or it's because GYM TEARS YOU UP and makes you hot.

The space has landed, and brought cheesy with it.  By the way, whatever happened to Naoki?  He hasn't done a song by himself in ages.

Post by: k//eternal on 05-17-2009, 18:54
Hn, how long is "ages"?

If NOVA2 qualifies then you've got Pluto and Pluto the First. Also, if having vocals done by someone else counts, there's NO CRIME which is a pretty recent item.

I guess either way you have osakaEVOLVED from HP2 but it's a pretty bad song, sadly. It has great instrumentation and there's this really good bit that sounds like it came from a Touhou game, but overall it's badly composed and sounds confused. Maybe if each section was like 5 times as long and was its own song it'd be good or something.

Sounds like something off of a 90's RPG game in a battle.

That's probably not good.

Post by: icy is a fish again on 05-18-2009, 13:08
Hey now, some of my favorite games that were RPGs came out of the 90s.  The only games I have to knock from that era were Tecmo's attempt at an RPG and most anything made by RPG Maker.

There's so many of these types of creators out there.  I used to mess with the PS2 version of RPG maker for PS1 but I never really did anything past the first area and initial items/monsters/story.  Too much time investment to not enjoy a game you make because you know everything about it, and it looks terrible too lol.

The problem with most RPGs in making them is that they do take a long time to make without a whole lot to show for it.  RPG Maker allows you to make stuff in about a quarter of the time, with, as you said in fewer words, a quarter of the results.

Tried it, got halfway through it, then worked out I coded everything so that if you walked into the room again, the storyline would continue from that point.

Plus I've re-wrote the entire story in my head halfway...  D:

I used to talk to a guy who used RPGMaker to make a game, and he's now trying to release it on Xbox Live, from the sounds of it. I was a beta tester. And it was :awesome:

In real coding, it's usually expected that the first execution will be a throwaway.  You clean up later.

In many things that's the case.  The first one is always to screw up and learn your areas of trouble so you can fix it the next time and the many thereafter.

I fear this will be the case as well when I begin painting my PVC figures sometime soon.

The sun doesn't seem to do a whole lot to me yet - yes I am walking outside, and yes, it's a bit brighter than the sun is where I live back home.  It is a fun time still.  This area is kind of like south carolina minus all the pretty beaches.

Back to the rants  :awesomD

A letter from rolling-star to k// (this is a joke based on a true story that happened to me)

Dear k//eternal,
I am writing this letter to inform you that the stepchart for Mendes is WAY TOO HARD. I played it on keyboard and was doing quite well until the end, where the jumps mixed into the streams tripped me up. But my dance bar (playing in XIV Anarch, btw) was only halfway down, until the final stream knocked me all the way down. I kept surviving through 98% of the stream, at about 10% of my bar, and then at the final note, I missed it and the "fail" screen came up. AT THE FREAKIN' FINAL NOTE.
I'm sorry to be a bother, k//, but I and many other Mendes stepchart haters need you to change the chart to something resembling more of an 11 than a 12.
Sincerely,
Head of the Mendes Stepchart Hater Club (rolling-star)

Note, this was a joke, but the freaking scenario DID happen to me lulz

Rant #2 - Weather in CA is quite stormy right now.  There was a large power outage and my CPU apparently doesn't last long on battery backup, so I was in the middle of closing things and telling people the power went out and it shut off.  Consequently, for some strange reason I lost all of my firefox bookmarks and firefox reset to default settings.  So, now I'm missing loads of bookmarks and I don't even know where to start.

Well, it's less of a rant because I don't like to air out my dirty laundry to other people very much. I've been that way in the past as well, where I don't have a problem with saying something, and it grosses someone out or whatever, and they're like "argh, never say that again."  I'm not vulgar, I just sometimes am a bit too frank about certain things which might make others squeamish.  Maybe something I need to work on as well.

It was sort of that she got really really offended that I dared have an opinion that differed from hers, clearly marking me as an idiot. She was not nicely nagging she was attacking and making my girlfriend feel small and useless. She was saying stuff like "you can't handle yourself  in public enviroments; you're gonna get fired" etc etc despite the fact that my girlfriend has held a steady job for 2 years. It just really bothers me that she attacks like that and my girlfriend can't even say anything cause it just makes it worse and worse for her.

Seriously, though, I have a friend who's in a situation like that, and eventually, he got out of the house and is living with his brother.  What does she need to do, though, to prove to her mom that she's responsible (other than the 2 years at the job) enough to not need :V's?

I think it's more of a control issue, her mother constantly tries to control every little thing that she does. It's kinda unfortunate but as soon as my girlfriend is capable of leaving she's gone; won't visit, probably won't call. She doesn't have anywhere else to go or she would be long gone. Thanks for the support but I don't really wanna talk to much about it as it's not my family, I just needed to vent a little.

Yeah well my mom doesn't trust me, and that's my problem.  If I get anything in the mail, she has to be right there to find out what it is so she can blow up at me if it's something she might find remotely " able" in her opinion (aka anything anime).

Case in point:  last week I got the remainder of my supplies for my PVC figure painting.  Since it's an imported package she had to sign for it.  I heard her answer the door and she was like "OH LOOK A PACKAGE... IT'S NOT FOR ME?  THEN I DON'T WANT IT."  So, she signs for it and takes off with it.  I knew what it was so I just waited patiently to see how long it was before it got to me (If it got to me).

So, she brings it in to me about 5 minutes later and is like "So what is it?"  I told her it was the other supplies I ordered.  Obviously not satisfied with that answer, she says
"That's not what it says on the box.  The box says 'resin figure'."
Me - "Well, yeah mom, I ordered this stuff from a resin figure kit store, naturally it says that on the box"
"Well then open it."
Me - "Why, do you think it's something you won't like or something?"
"Just open it."
Me - "Why?  Apparently you think it's a resin figure, that's what it says on the box.  Or do you think it's something I shouldn't have or something?"
No response.

So, I opened it, pulled everything out and set it all out nicely and then asked her if that was good enough for her random interest.  She didn't say anything, so I packed it up and handed the box to her and told her to bring it back when she was satisfied.

Next time I'm going to leave the freaking box unopened in plain sight and see how long it takes before she opens it.  Unfortunately for me, Nendoroid Nagi is going to be very hard to keep in the box o_o;;

Stuff like that is why I need to move out.  It's not that I receive/purchase anything she wouldn't like, it's that she thinks I do when I don't.  I figured she should know she raised me better but apparently she doesn't think the way I do.  There are other reasons behind my motivation to move out, but crap like this is one of the main ones.

I kind of wish that there wasn't a stigma attached to staying at home, because I do rather like it as well.  My parents probably wouldn't care, though.

@sock - a lot of the time, they do that stuff for reaction, so if you act like you're cool with it, they won't bother you.  At least, that's my experience.  Or you can start ordering things that will make them be like ??? like a monkey wrench. leather gloves, a 24 pack of sudafed, and a lot of 3954 pieces of hotel soap.

I don't know what to tell you, depending on how old you are there are different ways to handle the situation. But it's not a big deal, after all I'm into comics and video games; I'm the first to call myself a "nerd" it's not an insult to me it merely indicates one enjoys more academic/intellectual pursuits. I didn't have a girlfriend until I was nearly 19 and out of high school, I don't like casual dating it was either a commitment or nothing. Who you are is who you are, be that person and as long as it isn't illegal or really really out there they should be ok with it.

I remember when my own parents found out about my anime interests.  My two friends who were at my house at that moment in time will never forget either.  Now I make them tolerate it.  I'll post pictures of my room sometime (which is still very tame as far as I'm concerned).  In my case, when they don't like it, I'll just move out (as mentioned earlier).  Just be you, don't worry what people think, because everyone is going to think of you in some way or another.  I hope people laugh when they think of me because I try to do what I can to be unique.  If nobody thinks diffrrently of you, then you'll just be the same as everyone else (at least, that's the way I see it).

@Imasock my gf and I went to gamestop and got the same clerk that sold us the game, I just explained what happened and he apologized and replaced the game no problem. This made me  :)

Ah, good, good.  You didn't have to get anyone fired, cool.  (I did that once, boy was that fun, too).

Yeah, it's nice that someone could admit they made a mistake and correct it without causing an issue. What makes it really crazy is that Gamestop made a quick and easy exchange. But yes, be who you want to be, not who someone else thinks you should be, I mean I catch a lot of hell and I mean constant badgering from my grandparents for having a beard. A beard, so like Imasock said, be you and let others draw from it what they will.

I need to rant too... My parents don't know I'm into anime. But I love it. Azumanga + Lucky Star = <3
Every time they pass by me watching Azu, I have to quickly open another tab. I can't keep hiding this forever, but they'll think I'm weird and my sister (who has a boyfriend in 5th grade!!) will start calling me a nerd. What should I do?!  8|
There's one thing I regret about my younger years - I let other people dictate to me what my interests would be.  I was smart, I got good grades without really trying, but I felt like I could have done a lot more.  I really enjoyed reading a lot up through 4th or 5th grade.  I stopped reading because other people wanted to read comic books and play with playing cards and listen to Oasis and be "normal".  In high school, I almost completely stopped playing video games for a similar reason.  Once I got to college, I picked up a lot of my old interests because I found other people were cool with it.  Anyways, all this to say that one shouldn't hold back on their interests unless there's a moral reason to do so.  8D

Not necessarily, I suppose it depends on how old her sister is.  In reality that doesn't change his age but yeah.  If I was 19 and had a 15 year old girlfriend then I suppose you could call her loli, but if I was 16 and had a 15 year old girlfriend I don't think it would be as accurate to refer to her as such because we would be similar in age, yet the technicality still stands.

I was (and still am) so into reading I have over 100 books but I gave a bunch to my cousins and whatnot. My only regret is lack of space so I have to keep them in a box under the bed instead of on a shelf :(. My room is essentially devoid of decoration, I have a poster from my favorite band, a calendar, and 2 voice actors (Vic Mignogna and Chris Ayers) autographs on the wall above my monitor. I've always kinda had a lot of different interests, I got into manga and anime around 7th grade. One of the skater/jackass style guys who was a buddy of mine started collecting the entire run of Love Hina. The style was quirky and funny so I started getting into it too, Toonami and Cartoon Network brought me Reboot (not anime still awesome), Dragon Ball Z, Outlaw Star, Yu Yu Hakusho, and the like which got me into it. But my parents never really were "freaked out" by my interests, as long as it wasn't pornographic they let me be.

Oh and on the topic of 5th grade boyfriend I'm with Imasock.

Never let anyone tell you what normal is, you're as normal as you think you are.

I would assume the only proper correlation between P3 and his post is the mentioning of the said event occurring during a conversation involving P3.  I do not think they are related in the event's context, but I haven't played P3 so I would not know 100%.

Generally we tend to keep things PG around here, so if such things did exist in P3, it would most likely be a topic not openly discussed on the forums, rather, if it were discussed, it would be on IM's or PM's or the like.

Man... I'm hungry.

Edit - On topic rant.
When I go to subway and I tell them I want onionS, I expect onionS, not 3 strands of a single torus of AN onion slice.  Next time I'm going to tell them I want the freaking sandwich to look like the picture or else I'm walking out.

So get ready to hear a lot of rants about that, since florida drivers are horrible.

For a real rant, these Bing commercials are getting really annoying... And I really don't think I should go any further because I think everyone with a brain can realise google is perfectly fine if you know how to use it, and that dumbing down computers isn't a good thing to do, make them tough and keep them that way. Today when I tried to login to Windows it said that it couldn't log me in because the files were already in use and then shunted me off to a non administrator account. This was really freaky, but it also led me to a question. I have two hard drives in my computer C: and E:, C:is the one with the OS installed E: just has the various things I've downloaded/put on the computer and I've used it as an install directory. If C: crashes will I lose the data on E:?
Title: Interesting rants from stupidity
Post by: Imasock on 08-11-2009, 13:59
No, you won't lose E's data if C crashes.  If that was the case I'd  be the most angry person in the world.

I have 1.8Tb of data storage across three drives (1Tb, 500gb, 320gb), and my C drive accounts for a small 60gb partition of my 500gb drive.  I can reformat C as much as I want and none of the other drives will lose data.  Now, if my C drive's hardware itself crashes and dies, then yes, I'll lose my C and F drives because the hard drive itself has two partitions, 60gb and 440gb, 60gb for my OS and system programs, 440gb for storage and other stuff.  My D drive gets all my games and non-system programs, my E drive contains all my arcade download data like rips and such, and my J drive has all of my anime/images (that's the 1Tb external that has 20gb left, :V)

Tonight I while brushing my teeth I noticed a dark brown spot on my upper front tooth near the gumline. I figured it was a popcorn kernel as I'd just finished off a bowl and it all that it needed was a good flossing. So afterwards I looked more carefully and touched it, upon inspection it turns out to be a chip in the tooth that for some reason has a dark brown inside to it. This makes me angry as I now permanently look like an idiot who doesn't know how to brush his teeth.

Title: Interesting rants from stupidity

It doesn't hurt, it's just a cosmetic thing, it looks like I have something caught in my teeth.
Title: Interesting rants from stupidity
Post by: k//eternal on 08-21-2009, 17:55
Yeah, see if a dentist can fix that, I'd bet on it.
Title: Interesting rants from stupidity
Post by: Imasock on 08-21-2009, 19:34
Regardless of if it's a cosmetic thing now, it once your enamel has chipped it becomes significantly wearer there because the smoothness has been removed.  Now thure are smaller cracks and crevices and rougher textures that can progress into cavities or other problems, especially if it's near the gum s like that.

Most gum diseases center around the first 3mm of gums around the teeth, called "pits".  That's where the bacteria harbors itself under the gums between the flesh and tooth, and causes problems like gingivitis, so if this chip is close or like, at the gums, it could be a potential issue.

Less of a rant and more of a query, I usually do badly with planners because I forget things. To remedy this I've taken to writing on my calendar right next to my monitor so I'll have a constant reminder. This is inefficient and so I'm looking to find a way to have google calendar as a sort of widget, something that's either always visible or at least quickly accessible and prominent. Using the google calendar will allow me to schedule and if I can find a way to make it always visible then I wouldn't forget as I spend most of my time goofing off on the internet, a calendar constantly staring me in the face would be a good stern reminder.

Sounds like you, like me, have an organizational "problem" more than a schedule "problem".  Only way to fix that is to make everything have a place, and make it work in that way to be clean and pretty.  Once you get to that point, it's a little less daunting to get the scheduling bit working well.

If you're looking for something to keep you on schedule, though, you could use the calendar on your cell phone, as limited as it is.

It's an organizational problem at heart, it's time management. I have a not uncommon problem of going "oh I have a couple weeks to finish that" then I forget and then I'm like "oh crap that's due in a couple days". I'm just trying to find something that will help me keep my affairs in order.

One of my friends deals with this problem by taking whatever's in the queue and putting it in a list.  He then starts working on the list obsessively until stuff is done.  The good thing is that he gets things done.  The bad thing is that when he runs out of stuff, he's bored. XD

So my internet connection was supposed to get activated today, but apparently they're too dumb to do it properly and have to send a tech over tomorrow. I suspect they've activated the jack on the other side of the room, but that's the one that my bookshelf is in front of.

Speaking of crappy internet service, At&t knows too well how to give it. We're suppose to have a 2mbps dsl line, we're lucky to get 500kbps. So we call them and set up an appointment to come out and try to figure out what the problem is. We weren't only getting a slow connection, every once in a while it would dc for no reason. So this guy comes out and checks everything from our modem and router to the line down the street, everything is fine. So for good measure he replaced some of our connectors and cleaned up our box. We managed to get a decent connection of 1mbps, this lasted about 2 days. Now we're back to 500kbps and even dropping to 300kbps, the connection is almost nonexistent cutting out every 2 minutes. This is highly frustrating when I try to play TF2 or even browse and I am booted constantly. We're trying to get a hold of them at the moment to fix this.

Well, I'm still waiting, because apparently they couldn't get it to work and need to fix it or something next week. LAME.

Yeah at&t suck, I'm supposed to get a 6:1 connection and barely get 3 megs down and (if I'm lucky) 0.1 megs up, its horrible. My upload is pretty much capped at 50kbps no matter what I do and at that rate any computer on our network is un-usable... I swear I hate at&t with a passion (miss u s0 bad comcast)

Wallet was stolen today.

The thief got a grand total of $2, because I cancelled all my cards. Huge pain in the ass for me though, because now I have to pay bus fare (instead of riding free since now I don't have my ID), don't have my keys, have to use cash for everything and can't get more of it, etc.

This sort of thing is so incredibly idiotic.

Yeah I don't keep my SSN card in my wallet.  I had something similar happen last year, someone stole my TI-89 Titanium graphing calculator.  Like $170 gone.  Honestly, who steals calculators =X

It's not like the average person knows how to use the more advanced functions the thing is truly useful for anyway, =\

I guess I'll be a bit more protective of mine. It only cost me $120, but still...

I think it's 57 varieties of tomato.

At my high school you could leave your laptop laying in the hallway for an hour and nobody would touch it, leave your graphing calculator unattended for 15 seconds and it was gone. You know why? Cause I went to school with a bunch of nerds, huge nerds, a group which I am a proud member of.

Ok, so today I encountered the same problem logging in as I did before. A popup appeared that said, "Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficeint security rights or a corrupt local profile. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator" and then a second that said "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off."

Now this worked out ok as I simply logged back in to my main account and it was fine. From what I've seen however this message is never a small issue, what should I do? Make a new profile, back everything up to an external and torch the disk, or just start anew? (with everything backed up to an external)

EDIT: decided to back everything up regardless, also decided when this computer fails I will get a laptop to replace the desktop. Now I need to research good laptops.

Hm... problems that are intermittent (and seemingly random) are often hardware caused, perhaps memory or hard drive.  There's tools out there to test said hardware, all stuff that you'd boot up from a floppy/cd.  Then you could decide if it's worth it to just replace the component?
Title: Interesting rants from stupidity
Post by: eternalomega on 10-08-2009, 21:12
Well as I discussed elsewhere, I'm thinking about moving this computer to a secondary pc and getting a new one. I just replaced "new pc" with "laptop", but the tests are a good idea and I will probably do them. I'm backing up a lot of stuff anyway just because I should. I've had this 250 GB external for a long time and this is the 1st time I've taken it out of the box.

Much worse at our school, somebody actually had the nerve to try to sell all these stolen calculators on eBay. They quickly got  and expelled.

Also, you should back up more often. Trust me, it helps a lot...

I know I should...I just don't. Another question that arises now is should I wait for Windows 7 or go to Vista and upgrade? I'm leaning toward Windows 7 as I've heard that it's way better than Vista even in it's beta form.

Well, I've used it, and my impressions are that it looks pretty, and it looks a lot like vista except a little nicer.  Some of the annoyances are gone from Vista, and some of the annoyances are there as features.  Overall, though, even Vista's not bad if you have 4 gb of ram.

True but that's another one of those "are they just getting Vista stable and well supported while this new operating system is buggier than an infectious disease ward?" Or if Windows 7 is actually a viable system out of the gate. I'm sure we all remember Vista's first couple of weeks.
Title: Interesting rants from stupidity
Post by: CorruptDropbear on 10-09-2009, 11:15
No-one knows 100%, but the most likely answer is 'it'll be only slightly buggy as compared to Vista'. Either way, that's what Windows Update's for...

A lot of people are running leaked and pirated W7 right now and the concensus seems to be that it's already more stable than (current) Vista. Personally, I don't know, we'll see.

Post by: Imasock on 10-09-2009, 14:55
W7 is supposed to be what Vista should have been, so make of that what you will.

I think my biggest issue with W7 is how nothing is where I expected it to be when I tried it out over XP.  Also, it becomes increasingly harder for me to actually find the proper solution for a problem and how to accomplish that solution in W7, unfortunately.

It took me 40 minutes to get everything properly set up for a friend of mine to use wireless internet on our school's campus, his laptop uses one of the W7 release candidates.  I did the same thing in 3 minutes on my friend's XP laptop, =|

Yeah that's true, however there's always ease of use over time. The more familiar you are the easier it is to mess around. I dunno, Vista's installed on everything anymore, it's really a decision of Vista/W7 or tear Vista out and install XP.
Title: Interesting rants from stupidity

Title: Interesting rants from stupidity

Vista out and install XP.
I tried to do this on my friend's new laptop the other day.  Every time I went into the windows XP setup booting from the CD, it would blue screen after a certain point.  I'd try a different route, and go into the setup from the CD while Vista was running and it would tell me that the system wouldn't allow me to start either way I tried.  One method gave me the "This version of software is older than what's already on your system so we won't install it" business, and the other way I got some "This software has been blocked for use on this system due to security blah blah" junk.  I lol'd hardcore, because unless I install her hard drive as a secondary drive in my system and reformat it, there's no way I can install XP on it at ALL.

Isn't Microsoft wonderful?

Post by: icy is a fish again on 10-09-2009, 16:18
Yeah. there's some sort of thing in place that won't let you get rid of Vista and install XP.  There's some very special rules if you want XP and Vista, mainly the order that they are set up in the boot loader.

Try installing XP on your computer with it as the only drive drive, then run the utility on the cd called "SysPrep".  It'll wipe out the drivers and do a mini install for the disc.

Nothing's decided yet, I'm just trying to figure out what I should do. I'm still considering Ubuntu for the laptop, I'm just unsure because of the Open Office being different than Word, PowerPoint etc, and because I like to play a game from time to time but Wine should deal with that ok. I'm also unsure due to the fact that ubuntu seems...tricky and I'm not overly computer savvy.

So I got a comment on my youtube video for League of Legends, which I made like, a month after the game came out, and this guy decides to comment on the most inconsequential portion of one scene that wasn't really supposed to be there but had to be to connect with a later portion for coherence.

He says this:
"dude gtfo. U pwnd a lvl 7 alistar with lvl 17 anivia. Why do you even bother to put this shit on youtube? My girlfriend could have done that and she has no hands."

I stared at this statement in awe. I'm unsure if he's actually being serious or not, because to use your girlfriend as a stardard for utter retardedness is a pretty low blow to her more than it is to me, NOT TO MENTION the fact that he uses her disability as an even further criterion of lameness, in more ways than one.  I'm pretty sure it's not real, but it still made me think about what he said.  Doesn't bother me any since people who say stuff like that usually have no idea how to even play my character even remotely decently; I've played against MAYBE three Anivia players that were decent out of the 500+ matches I've played.  Oh well, pretty ridiculous either way.

no jk it's the companion cube  :cc:

Do you remember me at all? ;~;

Okay so I have a Mac and the only way I can play my favorite game in all the world (Touhou Perfect Cherry Blossom) is using this crappy WINE-run program called MikuInstaller. (Yes. It's Miku.)
And so, when I start it up, it takes the longest time to start. I have to quit all my other programs and move all the other windows out of the way including the X11 window, or else when I start Touhou the other 3/4 of the screen will be a garbled mess of window pieces. The bottom left corner is where it actually RUNS Touhou and I have to hide the Dock so it will work in the first place. When it DOES work, Touhou is in the bottom left quarter, and the rest of the damn screen is total white. That's how bad it is. And however, I manage to play pretty well.

(I'm still working on my skills in Lunatic though.)

Purchase the same cards, but non-foil non-promo, from someone else for a few bucks cheaper using "buy it now".

Sock memories from AX 2014: we were waiting in line (unofficially) to get into the Good Smile Company panel and the dude on staff kept saying this line over and over:

"The line for Good Smiles is capped!"

He said it about 7 times in a row about every 20 seconds.  I thought it was pretty amusing.  Sock was like "Seriously I'm going to tell brobeans over here that it's not plural. Can he just not?"
