Title: Opinions
Post by: eternalomega on 06-01-2009, 23:24
I have recently obtained access to a ps2 (I can use my girlfriends) and as such am going to purchase a couple games for it. These will all be older titles and I will be trying to get them cheap, because I am borderline miserly about spending money on myself. Here is the List of Games, and I would appreciate any opinions on what I should buy. My first set of buys will be 1-2 games depending on how cheap I can get them.

Resident evil 4
Disgaea 2 (I know it's great definitely gonna buy it)
Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence (Beat it, love the series it's on the 2nd round of buys)
Final Fantasy X
Shadow of the Colossus
Devil May Cry 2/3
Tales of the Abyss
Soul Nomad and the world eaters

If you think I should get one of the others if you could tell me which one and why I would be most appreciative.

Get DMC3, whether or not you've played the first game (it's a prequel anyway, so nothing's lost if you haven't). Game is fast-paced and fun (well, during combat) and with the different fighting styles you get to play it pretty much your way (more so than any other game in the series, even DMC4).

Skip DMC2 though, not worth it (it's the crappy entry in the series).

I've heard good things about Soul Nomad from HST. As for RE4, I'll be playing that sometime soon, but don't have much to say about it yet, haha.

Anything from the Megaten series is generally win - Persona series is good stuff, and they fixed the battle system in P4 so that it's... unbalanced still but playable.

Otherwise, the Megaman Collection series's are good buys.

Shadow of the Colossus is about a day and a half of ripping your hair out - bosses take so long to kill.  If you can get it for $5, it'd be worth it.

I know this is heresy around here, but I'm not really all that much for the IIDX games. I've heard good things about persona but I kinda want to play the earlier games before I play 4, I might play 3 if I could find it cheap.

Persona 3 before 4 is a good idea (if you plan on playing 3), Persona 4 is a much more polished game and playing them in the reverse order, I stopped partway through 3 because it was just a huge pain. WHERE IS MY TELEPORT WHEN WALKING AROUND TOWN/SCHOOL

I'll be picking up the Persona 1 remake on PSP, too, but something tells me that won't go too great...

Zone Of The Enders is really good game from kojima, it's like mix superfast mecha-action and little bit of RPG. Battling is the best ive seen for a while, really well done. One of the most beautiful PS2 games. Although the main character is really stupid 14-year old angst-kid, still the game has it's own great story and plot.

The second part is much better than the first one, it has more action and plot-twists and both games have amazing OST's. But theyre too short, ya can pass ZOE2 in 4 hours  D: But if you find them cheap, don't let your opportunity run away  :D

Ok, back from shopping; the final verdict was Persona 3 ($15) and RE 4 ($10) for me and she decided to buy DMC3, a Heroes of Might and Magic game, and Castlevania lament of innocence. I was pretty stoked to find Persona 3 brand new for 15 bucks.

Its only fun if you have the controller.

Anyways, only game I've played on the list is FF X, and its an OK game, but I generally prefer the international version.  (Major pain if you don't have a japanese PS2, though)

As for other cheap PS2 games... not really sure what else there is.  I'm not sure which genre you're into, but I do recall playing gauntlet with a bunch of other people one night.  It was pretty fun, especially since on the easiest difficulty you get infinite lives.  haha.  I forgot how much I got it for used from (that evil used game shop), but I somehow lucked out by getting a full box and manual.

FFXII was fine, but after you beat the game, it becomes a grindfest.  Eh.

If you can tolerate the first "game" (it's more like a movie, the first 8 hours you fight maybe 3-4 times), pick up Xenosaga.  The second one is a bit better in terms of cinematics, but it's ridiculously hard. There's no money in the game; you only have the items you find and that's it.  The third game was unbelievably epic, fixed every problem from the first two, made some battles as short as 5-8 seconds if you know what you're doing, and the graphics were actually much better than the previous ones by a long shot, not to mention the story.

If you'd rather not tolerate the first two, pick 3 up and just read the storyline summary section for 1 and 2, they're alright and do a decent job but many details are still missing, and you're just not as attached to the characters.

Fear's awake
Anger beats loud
Face reality
Never be charity
The enemy you're fighting covers whole society
(Damn right)
Mommy's not here gotta fight
(All night)

Right here shadow
10 o'clock direction
Seize the moment
They destroy the nation
Your rhyme is slow-motion
Give me motivation
Freaked out now
And dead on arrival

Round up around
Spit out all over
Rhyme like a rolling stone
Come in the crowd
Watch out the moon
They diss you loud
Guess what this sound
It bombs whole ground
So round up

Don't ease your pace
Cuz enemy is brutal
Moment of truth
There ain't no truce
You're the only one
One world
One love
But the battle goes on
Shadows of mass destruction

I don't care anymore / enough of fake smiles,
Buckwild I go / tried it on but it didn't fit me so,
Found a better pair of shoes to walk,
Even in defeat I hold my pride never gonna talk,
Better yet,
My mouth is tight like James Bond,
You thought you saw me but next second I'm gone,
I don't want no throne,
I'm a freelancer do for benjamins but I'm not a gangster,
Show me what you got,
If you got it on cuz I fight not only verbally,
Volatile man I am gotta game that I play

I thought you might like the way,
I destruct every where I lay my hands,
I'm sick to the burn,
From the top of the dome to the tip of my toe,
I call the shots the frontman calls the drop,
Going no where if you wanna take my spot,

Break down right off the bat / I pop my armory
Too smooth to see and I sting like bee,
like Muhamad Ali Champion of Champions will not defeat,
Came up to beat the enemy at large,
But tonight let us take a break back to kids in gocart.

Once again I'm back in the lab
Cleaning my knives ready for stab
I never committed a crime I had to
Out of necessity I done couple
I plead guilty to lord in the chapel
Forgiveness given cuz I don't look for trouble
Instead it finds me
And what I do is fight back
Never look back the past cuz it hurts to think back
I pray to God cuz I'm still paranoid today
Can't lean back / now its over
Survival of the fittest time for me to take over
I was lenient but games over
Mass destruction is now our slogan
Just won't do things in slow mo
Fast life fast money kinda like promo / break down

Still get it going on
I am the next ruler the python
Don't be scared of biting I'm not a tyson
Ride on / I'm the hurricane in ocean
About to land disturbing the peace
It's the War Zone
You best took it serious when you heard the tone.

I would highly recommend Shadow of the Colossus, you should be able to pick it up for $20. Yes it is a bit frustrating, but it's not impossible. The battles are epic.

Also, Kingdom Hearts 2. Great game, but I would suggest playing the first one so you're not totally lost in the story. It's starts slow so be prepared for reading. They also have Kingdom Hearts mangas, if you're looking for a fast way of getting the story, but $10 a book adds up. I would recommend reading the Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories manga, instead of playing the game. The card system is tedious and down right annoying. Long story short, KH and KH2 also $20 a piece.

Finally, in the future, if you're looking to buy a fun cheap game, look into the Ratchet and Clank series. They're simple, fun, and best of all cheap. The first one is okay, but once you get to the second, and third it gets really fun. The fourth Ratchet and Clank: Deadlocked, is amazing, the customizable weapons and the epic battles are fun. The hovership levels are a bit nerve racking, but once you get passed those, it's pretty basic, point and shoot.

Ok now I'm irritated, I bought DMC 3 Special edition. It was the same price as the normal and it has extra stuff. So I'm playing it tonight and I realize something, the extra content isn't there, the clerk at the store put in the wrong disc. I know this is a small gripe but it is very irritating to me to not get what I payed for.

Take it back and show them it's not the same.  I did that once.  I bought a game that came in a special edition, and when I got it home and opened it up, only two of the five items were there. I'm one of those people that purchases pre-orders specifically for the goodies that accompany them, so the next day I took a trip back and let them know how things went down.  They gave me some grief but I raised hell and had everyone in the gamestop looking at the guy behind the counter (who was also the one who sold it to me the day before).  He eventually refunded me for the purchase, and I took my money, told him I'd purchase it at a different establishment, and said I'd never shop there again (though I did once because I found a hard to find game there for dirt cheap).

You paid for it, go back and get it, and make sure they know well and good your opinion about their inadequate service.  Game stores these days have such a bad rep, but it's a well deserved one.

Post by: eternalomega on 06-06-2009, 01:44
Yeah, I'm gonna take it back; I don't think I'll have to raise that much hell as it's probably just an honest mistake. The only thing is the disc, it's not the special edition disc. There were no extra goodies in it, the dude was helping a kid and his dad trade in their ps2 and about 100 games and had to stop in the middle to help us. His idiot other associate wandered off and which from discussion didn't seem unusual, the discs look about the same and I'm putting my faith in the fact that he just made a grab for the first disc with the DMC 3 title on it. He actually made an effort to get us the best used discs he had in the drawer (minimal scratching) and we have 7 days to take it back if we don't like it so I don't think it'll be a problem.

Ok, after a few days with new games here are my impressions. DMC is fast and furious fun, my only gripe is it's pathetically weak story. DMC 3 fixes it but I'm not playing any more until I get the special edition I payed for. Resident Evil 4 is fun and interesting. I don't think Atlus expected it to be a sleeper hit.  The characters are cool, the story's interesting, evokers, yeah.  It's still getting some buzz a year after release.

If you have a DS and can get your hands on it, Rhapsody is a cute but really short game.  If you can find it on PS1, get it.  Nippon Ichi's Ichiban.

Ah, well then...we will have to see about this. I tend to hardcore grind when I play RPG's; some players are tactical they bring the exact equipment necessary to counter the enemies specific abilities, I fall into the category of players who bring the biggest sword and shield to the fight and have leveled up so much that my abilities and stats are high enough to render the bosses abilities meaningless.

Also in Persona am I on a time limit a la Valkyrie Profile?

Post by: k//eternal on 06-16-2009, 03:49
P3's S-Links (or several of them) are retarded and I hate dealing with them. Build a few to max (depending on which you like to use) and mostly ignore the rest (building them up just enough to create the higher levels of the ones you like), I say.

Early on, even if you get tired, try to keep battling until you're going to die before you get out of there. You can get easy Courage boosts from the nurse by drinking the potion, and get your status back by saving before you use the bathroom.

I'd work on maxing a few S-Links as higher priority than simple grinding, but leveling everyone up is still important.

Thanks k//, I wanted to know because what I'm seeing is that the game is intrinsically going against my usual play style. If left unchecked I'll just use Orpheus the whole game. But I guess I'll just have to adapt, btw can you change the personas on your team?
Title: Opinions
Post by: k//eternal on 06-16-2009, 12:07
The other party members' Personas upgrade automatically at certain points in the story.

In Persona 4, they upgrade when you max their S-Links.

So k// do you have any suggestions on what Personality traits (charm, courage, academics) or S-Links to pay special attention too?
Title: Opinions
Post by: k//eternal on 06-16-2009, 15:07
Personality traits will max out much faster than you think they will. Courage and Academics should be maxed together and kinda early (you can get Tired from studying at night, which allows you to get the Courage boost at the nurse's office). If you manage to hit Great status, go to the shrine for a higher Academics boost.

Acing exams gets you a few nifty items and is required for one S-Link.

It'll look like they're going up really slowly, but you'll probably max everything out long before the game ends.

As for which S-Links to max, just look at what types of Personas you're using a lot and go with those. It's a matter of playing style and who you want in your party.
Title: Opinions
Post by: eternalomega on 06-16-2009, 15:30

NO, don't stick with Orpheus, that's a horrid idea. You've seen how Orpheus is leveling way slower than the other characters' Personas, right? You're supposed to fuse new ones along the way.

I guess in theory an Orpheus run is possible, but that's making it way harder than it has to be.
Title: Opinions
Post by: eternalomega on 06-16-2009, 18:33
Well that's why I ask people for ideas, I tend to stick with the main characters initial. On your advice I will go out and try to utilize other personas. What I was saying was if left unattended or told that Orpheus is no good I'll use him and just be like "this game is retardedly hard". Just gotta find someone to specialize with now. I heard Lucifer/Devil combo was really good.

Post by: k//eternal on 06-16-2009, 19:19
Well, that's for near the end of the game. Just go with whatever's high level in your favorite S-Links.

I'm partial to magic-heavy types, but if you don't want to think, try the brute force flavor like Strength. You might want to get Hermit up since debuffs are SUPER USEFUL in this game.
Title: Opinions
Post by: eternalomega on 06-16-2009, 23:30
Mmmmmm sweet delicious magicky death...I love magic users far more than brute strength. Which is good because my Arcana S-link is high so far.

I like how you are playing new games while I continue to rediscover old games.

Well it's fitting since many of the games that I've come to love recently have all been recommendations from you, (except MGS3 I have always been a snake fan). My next buy is gonna be Disgaea 2, if I can find it.

EDIT: Alright, tired of following the max s-link faq, gonna use it to get to the high levels in what I want (justice, magician, death) then next run through when I don't have to fiddle about with my attributes and I have my most powerful personas I can max my links and get the ultra personas.

I COMMAND THEE THREAD RISE ONCE MORE!

I am resurrecting this thread to ask people's opinions on a good cheap or free antivirus/antispyware. I run Malwarebytes so actual removal isn't the issue it's more real time protection. I could go with CA Security Suite cause I can get it for free but it eats up resources and there is a CA folder in my C: drive that's like 20 GB and I can't do anything with it, so I'm slightly concerned about that. I'm getting a new computer soon so it will have Windows 7 on there.

Avast. It's sometimes overparanoid, which can be a little annoying, but at the end of the day it's better to have it try too hard than too little, I think.

Avast protects also from rootkits almost all the time, and often times destroys spyware, but it also tells spybot to get lost.  Also, I tell it not to do all of the scans that it does, because it can get process intensive.

I didn't like Dragon Age but a lot of people do.  I made my character, walked 500 feet in-game, and suddenly out of nowhere a poison trap goes off and two skeletons come out of hiding.  No antidote for poison so consequently, that and the fact that my ally didn't actually do anything to fight, the two skeletons killed me and my ally.

After this I promptly exited the game and *sings* uninstaaaaaaaaaaall.

I loved TES3:Morrowind and used to make mods for it with the editor (a pain to learn but kind of fun after), but I didn't get as much into Oblivion partly because I thought it felt a lot like Morrowind with tweaks.  I did play it for 10+ hours though and liked what I saw and played of it.  It's just so big that you sometimes get lost in the ability to go wherever and do whatever.  Sometimes it feels more like a sandbox than a game, but some people like it that way.

I played the hell out of Oblivion. I stopped for a while because I wanted to go through other games, but I still have it installed. I like it personally, it does get frustrating at times, but a little challenge is always good. Plus the price, I picked up mine for $20 and it includes the 2 expansions(Shivering Isles is amazing, it's like a different game entirely, keeps it fresh). Dragon Age... $50 not including the new $40 expansion.

Copy Protection Mostly, I have no problem with a disk check but I hate the SecuRom crap that installs and never uninstalls regardless of what you do with the game. I actually really looked forward to Mass Effect and Bioshock but this is a brand new computer and it's all purpose so I can't bog it down with heavy copy protection software. Although it's a possibility if the copy protection is either toned down or removable.

@nekos- yeah that's a good point, I'm cheap as it is so that is a strong point and like I said the Elder Scrolls series is very very good.

Well, it's certainly been cracked, although I don't know the details about the PC version, I'm playing it on my huegbox (which I picked up recently for a grand total of $70 shipped).

People have been pirating the PC version, though, so it's certain that the copy protection has been "broken" somehow.

http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

A thingy that tells you what the thermal probe in the cpu is reading for temp.  Generally, if you're running under 60 C (140 F) you'll be fine.  If you have an aggressive graphics card (read Geforce 9 series or ATI 38 or 48 series), bump that temp up 20 degrees C.

Haha, that's exactly the program I'm using to monitor it now thanks icy now I'm sure it's a quality program. I set the overheat protection for 80 degrees C because I do have a hardy graphics card, if it gets that hot it warns me and I can shut it down quickly. This is a laptop so it's delicate and prone to heating quicker so you can understand my concern.

My vid card runs at ~50-52C idle, ~56-60C in games.
CPU, ~38-40C idle, ~46-50C in games.

But, desktops have advantageous airflow, so...

Also, there might be some programs that will allow you to adjust your fan speeds.  My GPU fan was set to 22% when I first got it, and it would get to ~70-74C in games, which I thought was not good, so I fount RivaTuner for it and I bumped it up to 80% speed on startup, and now it never goes above ~62C on hot days.  If you've got an Nvidia card, check out RivaTuner, good stuff.  I also manually set my CPU fan to 80% as well, cause I hate auto-control fans when they rev up and down constantly while I'm playing a game or processing videos or photoshopping.

Yay for fugly motherboard temp monitoring GUIs.

I've been looking for a fan control software similar to that, my issues are
1) my card is a ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4200
2) Windows 7 wont let me install any program with unsigned drivers
3) my laptop isn't fully supported by Speedfan

I will press on and keep trying to find something that will let me kick the fan speed up a little.

2) Windows 7 wont let me install any program with unsigned drivers
There is a way to install unsigned drivers but this will require you to do some mucking around with system files.  Afterward you will have to keep starting Windows via F8 on boot screen and then selecting "enable unsigned drivers" or something of that sort.  I had to do this when I wanted to overclock USB ports to play BlazBlue CS with better response times.

Reminds me of the new avast, it is controllable to be like internet mom if you want it to be, but it can also be as minimally invasive as possible (lower the shields).  I think a nice touch is the disabling of the shields and uninstallation has a 1 minute confirm window - keeps rootkits from uninstalling your av.

Depends on whether you value solid gameplay over a good story, because FF12 has some of the best combat in the series but the plot is widely regarded as one of the worst.

FFX-2 is pretty much in the same boat, if you haven't played that either, although it has a lot more goofy charm so you don't take the plot too seriously there.

There was this badge that makes a chain or string or whatever slash across the screen and stay there, and enemies caught by it flinch, too. I'd toss out like three of those at once and beat them up with some other stuff, wrecks all normal encounters handily.
