Title: rolling-star was a weeb. were you?
Post by: Rolling Star... on 07-11-2014, 10:55
i was just looking through some of my old posts and... wow D:
apologies to anyone who knew me in 2009, seriously. i strive to overcome my past weebishness and create a new future for myself as a kbbs user and as a person
and as a dragon

(it probably hasn't helped my case that i was in japan like... five days ago?)

have you guys had any memorable weeb experiences since i last saw you?

I can go look up posts on the internet from me when I was 13 years old. It's absolutely appaling.

i do think that at the ages of 12-13 we did have an excuse to be weebs (i joined kbbs when i was 12? i think? woah) but then when you get older there is 0 reason for that...
i almost want to dig up my old emails since that was the only way i communicated with friends back in 2009, but i dread what i'll find there so i'm going to pass for now

show me your weeb posts do it do it

They are in German, on a different board. Basically it's me using 100 times the emoticons I am using now, asking tons of questions some googling would have resolved easily and trying to become good at everything without even knowing where to start or understanding the principles of effort.

After all that I only got ok at level design (http://zyl.pestermom.com/projects/leveldesign.html) without any kind of structured approach lol.

I'm sure I have weeb posts somewhere on here. Where else would they be?

Where else would they be?

i doubted this for a second and then realized dance anarchy has been a thing since 2003. that's... what? in viable weeb age range for you?

It's okay, I feel the same way for about 90% of my posts. Nothing you can really do about it, but accept it and move on.

Nothing wrong with it. Every nerd has a weeb phase :)

It's like how most Pokemon starters are super cute, then look horrible for a while after they evolve once, then they're awesome again.

This is why I choose Pokemon that don't evolve. PACHIRISU YEAAAAAH!

I know I'm dumb. I will happily take off the filter around here because I know that y'all are wack and cool and I can just be the anything if the support is strong with this one.

Weebing is fun! I can't stob crying puckets of tears!

i think the kind of weeb you are when you realize that you are a weeb is... the decent and good kind of weeb.

it's like... an advanced class of weeb?

class change: weeaboo -> enlightened weeb
now instead of broken japanese, the weapons available to you are knowledge, camaraderie and sarcasm (you'll still have to level those up though, it's part of the package) :D

I keep getting weirded out by teenage weebs being massive fanboys/girls of random content on Youtube. I mean I like myself some east-asian cartoons I'm not gonna lie, but they make it a fucking religion and have verbal arguments what the fuck. There is way too much stuff to become overly defensive for one thing. And yet I fear what they do is more according to human nature. That culture they like is just a mental model in their own head implied through hours of watching a screen with headphones on - heck same goes for most of us; but they don't realize the lack of interpersonal communication required to add value to culture and make complete fools of themselves defending their idea of cultural identification although at no point it required mutual interaction to conceive. Is that how it should be? Like how everyone just "knows" when you wear a suit you are being serious and up for business, and all you did have to do to know that is to have observed someone in a suit and how they behave?

Sorry for starting a serious discussion on an exhausting topic. >_>

oh man i know exactly what you're talking about and it creeps me out as well, mainly because of the refusal to go beyond just observing the parts of the culture that they're familiar with? learning about anything requires the willingness and ability to discard what you think you already know in order to truly learn, and even a teacher can't really force anyone to that point-- they have to find it themselves. which is why i'm iffy about people who believe that "japanese things are automatically better!!!" and don't take into account the culture and history behind them, as well as recognizing the bad things about it. read: weeaboo.

it's not even just restricted to japan and conventional weebism; this goes for any other foreign culture, and i think it's just a matter of immaturity if you can't look past what you think you know. *shrug*

Sorry for starting a serious discussion on an exhausting topic. >_>

nah man, talking about this kind of stuff is really interesting sometimes!

Wouldn't that be nifty, if Vocaloid became an AI that would make its own songs.

I FEEL YOU I GET SO PISSED OFF WHEN PEOPLE DON'T CREDIT THE PRODUCERS?????? i'm really into the producer scene and i'm so upset that people don't actually see how much effort is put into the songs, and how songs by the same producer have a certain common feel to them, and how some of them use the same artist for the PV, and how producers' sounds influence each other as time goes by, and how the trends in the vocarankings evolve depending on the new vocaloids that are being used by old producers or the new producers who are making breakout hits and how they interact and ALSO how every. single. vocaloid producer. is an adorable, nerdy, enthusiastic and thankful little dork.

i'm sorry i'm a vocaloid weeb if you get me started i will not stop talking

The thing is, if it would produce same type and quality of stuff as producers right now, nobody would ever notice. I don't even know what most of the artists of the songs I listen to look like lol. Most hobbyists stay anonymous or just very briefly show themselves in a gimmick video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3rCa01e43A) or something. Of others you get potato sideshots from old gigs in a dark room (http://www.sharpnel.com/artists/sharpnel-net). It's very much pixels on a screen for me, which makes it hard for me to understand how people attach so much meaning everywhere.

a lot of vocaloid producers are actually more public figures now, and even if you don't know what they look like you can understand their personality from their tweets, song production comments, and occasional livestreams. it really takes some investigation to get to know them, which is another thing i guess?

And just as I used AuraQualic as an example he posts a proper, personal thank-you video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mTQGvEctks). gg argument

I am pretty lazy at "investigating". If I have to dig through some .jp domains and translate some Japanese to get to know the artist, chances are I won't do it.

I have seen Dixie Flatline in person twice.  He is actually pretty cool people, seems like.  Just humble respectful fan who has a story to share.

YOU KNOW WHAT ICY, SCREW YOU.
i've always wanted to meet him, he's been doing lots of live events and like 3 of my friends have met him and i'm sad because he created the one vocaloid song that is the most important to me and ; A;

When you go to lots of conventions you have those sorts of opportunities. I only go to two every year, icy goes to many more than I do. I don't know how he does it, money becomes an issue for me (though it won't be after October).

I shook hands and talked 30 minutes with Perfume before their 2nd world tour Cologne concert. Friend won meet and greet and took me with him. I'm no hardcore fan but it was a unique backstage experience. "Hatsune Miku desu kaaaa?" Never forget.

Both of the times I have seen him were with Sock.  So you clearly need to get out to Anime Expo. |3  But seriously, JBF and the sequel are just <3<3<3.

I have a mini-experience (less money spend, more people in room, drive to location during day of convention) when I'm not attending cons with you - I use it as a friend hang-out time tool.  I also don't spend my monies on as many figures, and gainful employment and being 30 and junk helps. Ehehe. ^_^  Doesn't matter, though, my bank account is still hurting.

is he always at Anime Expo though? last I checked, Vocaloid producers don't usually show up that often outside Japan... although Dixie is kind of a special case, he's all over the place since he speaks so many different languages.

... holy shit I completely forgot. speaking of which, is anyone else going to MikuExpo this year? I'm going with my S.O. and two other friends and if any of you are there it would be a blast :awesome:

Ah, nice.  Never been out to Boston before.  I don't know much about the convention scene out there.  I think k// would know a bit more about that? (or at least about good places around there :O )
